Landing Permit

A landing permit is government authorization for an aircraft to land in a foreign country or at a restricted airport. It is separate from overflight permission: you need both when an international charter crosses foreign airspace and touches down abroad.

Why it matters

Why landing permit matters

Passengers see landing permits as scheduling constraints and invoice line items on international trips. Last-minute airport or country changes can require new approvals and delay departure even when the aircraft has overflight clearance.

Cost

How it affects cost

Landing permit fees, slot coordination, and handling agent services may appear on international charter invoices. All-in quotes should define whether landing permits at your destination are bundled or passed through.

Example

A quick example

A New York to Paris quote lists occupied hours, overflight permits for en-route airspace, and a separate landing and handling line for Le Bourget arrival in France. Comparing transatlantic proposals requires both permit types, not only hourly rate.

Common questions

What is the difference between a landing permit and an overflight permit?

Overflight covers flying through a country's airspace without landing. Landing permits authorize arrival at a specific country or airport. International charters often need both.

Do passengers apply for landing permits?

No. The Part 135 operator or handling agent files permits. Passengers should confirm destination landing authorization is included before deposit.

Can landing permits delay my trip?

Yes. Changing destination country, airport, or arrival time close to departure can require new filings and ground handling coordination.

Are landing permits the same as airport slots?

Related but not identical. Some busy airports require slot coordination in addition to country landing permission. Ask whether your quote includes both for the arrival field.
